Now that Thanksgiving Break has come to an end, it is time to have one big push to finish out these final few weeks of the semester and send us into Winter Break. This article will cover the different holidays celebrated over break and some of the fun activities that you can do or participate in over the break, whether it is for a price or just a fun and free activity.
Over winter break many holidays are celebrated by millions if not billions of people, and they all have their own traditions. These holidays include Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, and one most everyone celebrates, the New Year. Throughout these holidays celebrated by different religions, diving deeper into the traditions of the people of these different groups is very interesting, and can help you learn more about your unique traditions and that of others.
Local and non-local, there are so many fun activities to do over the break coming up. These next few I’m going to mention are specifically those that cost money.
First, a place that has recently opened at a pretty convenient location and time (due to the cold temperatures): the bowling alley, Lucky Strike, located at 7950 Northfield Blvd, Denver, CO 80238. This destination is awesome with 30 bowling lanes, reviews say delicious food, and if you are willing to spend a little more an arcade with the chance to win prizes. If you want to get out with friends or family, coming by the newly opened, well rated, Lucky Strike may be the place to go. You can find their prices and more information on their website.
Another fun activity to do over the break includes stopping by your local movie theater, which for many is Harkins Theater, located at 8300 Northfield Blvd, Denver, CO 80238. Movie theaters are big right now due to the decline in temperatures and the fact that there are many good movies out right now. One of these is Gladiator 2, which I recently had the pleasure of getting to see. In my opinion, it was really well done. This movie had a strong story as it is the sequel to the original, made back in 2000, and it did a great job hooking the audience with its intense battle scenes and other cool aspects as well. Similar to the first one, the cinematography was incredible. So if you are looking for another thing to do over break, stop by Harkins, and go see Gladiator 2 or any of the other movies. You can buy tickets and learn more at their website.
One final activity that costs a little money is going to Zoo Lights. This is an activity located at Denver Zoo, 2300 Steele St, Denver, CO 80205, where you can walk throughout the zoo and see many cool light designs along with some animals. Having been there myself I can say that it is pretty cool to see. It’s a good idea to go earlier in the day while it is still bright and see all the animals, and then when it gets dark the lights come on and some animals stay out, providing a fun activity to do with family and friends. More information is located here on their website.
Now that we have covered some activities that cost some money, let’s cover a few activities that you can take part in for free. Many of these are pretty basic but provide fun opportunities and chances to make memories over break.
The first of these activities is just spending time with friends and family, and playing board games or finding someone's basement to binge watch shows and movies in. These activities are great for lazy days around the house, and when it is cold out or you are snowed in, there is no better thing to do than sit around with a hot cup of cocoa playing board games, video games, and watching movies.
A few other activities that may require you to brave the cold a little include going on hikes, and meeting up with friends to just walk around or play sports or other snow activities. Along with this, when it gets dark outside rather than having to go to Zoo Lights to see lights, just drive around your neighborhood or even walk and see many awesome decorations. These activities can be very fun if you take the chance to go out in the cold, but if not it is understandable as oftentimes being inside is the better option.
This wraps up my December newspaper article, but if you are looking for a fun Winter Break activity, take all those mentioned into consideration.
