Upcoming May Holidays

By: Anthony Randolph

Coming up this May there are a good amount of holidays that don’t get as much attention as other Holidays but have their own importance, traditions, and history. The Holidays that will be covered in this article are Cinco De Mayo, Mothers Day, and Memorial Day.

To begin, on May 5th, the holiday of Cinco De Mayo is celebrated. This holiday is often confused with Mexican Independence day which is actually on September 16th. Cinco De Mayo is historically celebrated in Mexico but in the recent decades has become more of an American tradition and holiday to look forward to. The holiday of Cinco De Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican victory at the battle of Pueblo, Mexico, back in 1862. On the morning of May 5th in 1862 the city of Pueblo, Mexico was attacked. This attack was from over 6,000 French troops, and the people of Pueblo were significantly outnumbered but with their determination they were able to force the French to retreat from the battle. This event was so historic and important that it is still remembered and celebrated over 150 years later. This holiday is celebrated in many different ways but the biggest tradition is the parades held throughout the United States and Mexico, eating Mexican cuisine, and having family gatherings.

The next holiday is Mother’s Day which is the celebration of mothers and motherhood. This holiday has been celebrated in the United States since 1908 which was the first widely recognized celebration of this holiday. Mother’s Day is a very important holiday as mothers are often those who give life to the world and help raise children to be the best they can be. Mothers are greatly appreciated as are fathers who are celebrated on their own day in the month of June. Mother's Day is traditionally celebrated by just spending time with your mom and giving them gifts and cards, then possibly making them dinner or going out to eat. Mother’s Day is a national holiday and is significant because of the importance of mothers to their families all across the country.

The final day that this article will cover is Memorial Day. This is a very significant federal holiday and honors all who have died while serving the country in the U.S. Military. This holiday is similar to Veterans Day which honors all veterans whether they are dead or alive but Memorial day specifically focuses on those who died while serving in the military. This day has been celebrated for over 150 years, and its first celebration took place on May 30, 1868. This year this holiday falls on May 26. Common traditions on Memorial Day include parades, ceremonies, and oftentimes visiting cemeteries to recognize and honor those who died fighting for the U.S.. On Memorial Day, schools and workplaces are often closed in order to honor these veterans. The history behind this holiday is very important and honoring and celebrating this holiday helps remind citizens of all the people serving them and the U.S., specifically those who have passed.
