Chat GPT: Greatest Innovation in Education?

November 2023

November 30th this year will mark the one year anniversary of Open AI’s generative AI model, Chat GPT. Although many in the technology industry celebrated the amazing potential of this new technology and the prospects it had to improve the world. Many skeptics of the software raised concerns around dangers of students using the platform as a way to cheat. This concern is completely valid and shouldn’t be dismissed. There are no true solutions to address this yet, as it really is up to a professor or teacher to determine if they believe it was written with chat GPT as there are no credible or definitive chat GPT checkers available. Despite the negative implications of the introduction of chat GPT the platform does offer some potential benefits to student’s education.

Studying Chat GPT opens up unprecedented opportunities for students to study and learn with their own personal tutor all the time. One opportunity researched for this article was language learning. When prompted, Chat GPT would have conversations with a student as well as correct grammatical errors in the students work. Of course a student could just practice writing on their own, but Chat GPT allows for the student to receive immediate feedback. This type of immediate feedback will allow students to learn a language more efficiently and effectively.

Chat GPT also can be an instrumental tool for helping students study for an upcoming exam(especially ones on a national or international curriculum). All one would have to do is ask Chat GPT for exam style questions in a certain class and unit. If the class curriculum is not nationally or globally aligned like an AP or IB class, students instead should describe the content that will be covered on the test. If a study guide is provided then the entire study guide can be entered into the program and used to generate questions. By using Chat GPT as a studying tool students can save time and study more effectively. As always it is imperative to fact check information from Chat GPT as it can make mistakes. During testing for this article there were a few times when Chat GPT was wrong about content, so if something doesn’t seem right an old fashioned Google search is a good idea.
